When Miss J turned 50 Carol Haines and Carol Dyer supported her to plan a very special weekend. This involved a party, inviting family and friends, including friends from her school days, and a trip to Butlers in the Buff with her housemates. 10 years on and Miss J was keen to get planning again, this time Miss J opted for a party with family and friends plus a trip to Walt Disney World in Florida. Miss J asked that Carol Dyer's husband Rich (or more commonly known as Mr Grumpy) and Carol support her. Carol was a little nervous that they hadn’t understood Miss J quite correctly, but then when we walked through the airport, Miss J spotted the aeroplane, and the squeals of delight, alerted everyone to the fact that this was going to be a very special trip.
In Walt Disney World, you are given a badge to let everyone know it’s your birthday - Miss J wore her badge every day and it was seen how her body language changed as she lip read when people were saying "happy birthday".
On her actual birthday, Miss J went to see Mickey and Minnie Mouse, to everybody's delights they signed "happy birthday" when they realised that Miss J was deaf.
It was a truly remarkable fortnight, but the highlight for Carol was the swimming, every pool in Disney has a chairlift, Miss J was keen to swim and use the hot tub at every opportunity. Carol could see an increase in Miss J’s mobility after she had been in the water, especially the hot tub. This then got her mind working overtime. Everyone at Carich Care enjoys the swimming pool, but finding a suitable pool, with availability, at an affordable price is non-existent in Gloucestershire. Now the dream is to support Carich Care to save some money, to find a plot of land, and then build a suitable pool. It may only remain a dream but Carich will try to make it a reality. Should anyone know of any land or of any available grants then please do let us know.
